Where We Live

Students live in homes on our campus in Black Mountain, North Carolina amidst a thriving community of believers seeking to live like Jesus. Students are often found studying on their porches, building a bonfire, or hiking the Kitsuma Trail nearby.

Where We Eat

Some of the most meaningful conversations happen when breaking bread together. Our students cook and eat together around a dinner table. Not only does this habit build connection, but it is often healthier and more cost-effective than other dining options.

Where We Explore

Excel College is set in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Waterfalls, rhododendron–filled forests, and expansive mountain vistas surround our campus. Here, our students can retreat from distraction and explore God’s creation. Black Mountain is a charming mountain town filled with quiet cafes, restaurants, tourism, and a small-town feel. Our campus is within 15 minutes of Asheville, a city known for its music, food, and mountain culture.

My daughter was unsure about attending Excel... Now that she's attended and is beginning her practicum, she cannot imagine her life having not experienced it. What a parent can teach only goes so far. Excel takes things to the next level in a way that changes someone from the inside out but yet transforms each student into a beacon of light that touches everyone around them thereafter.

We are so grateful to the Lord and to the leadership for our daughter to have these opportunities for growth and development through Excel! In addition to completing her bachelor's degree, she has grown and blossomed in every area, and learned to face challenges that produce a type of growth that take most of us decades in our everyday lives, while being surrounded by people who care about and support her through the process. What an incredible catapult into a healthy and productive life ahead!

Juliette is a different person three years in than when she started... She has always been independent — capable of taking care of herself. But [Excel] required her to step up to a different level entirely. And it was exciting to watch it work. Because she wasn't just a student. She was working. She was part of a community. She was functioning as a professional. That combination sharpens you in a way that a traditional college environment simply doesn't. I think a lot of parents can relate to sending a kid off to college and finding out the priority is the social life — "Are you learning?" "Yeah, sure, whatever - but I'm having a lot of fun." Here, it was both. Learning and living — but with real responsibility woven through it. What makes Excel work, I think, is both ends of that tension: the weight of real responsibility, and the knowledge that she's not carrying it alone. She's supported — by staff, by community, by people who are genuinely invested in her. Both of those things together are what this place is built on. And both of them were essential to who Juliette has become.
